When surveyed about their greatest fear, many Americans have been known to say that the fear of public speaking is their number 1 fear. Followed by sharks, spiders etc. While this might not be 100% accurate (I did some research on this and found a great study on fear) I know for a fact that public speaking is not one of my greatest fears. I’ve come to find out that one of my greatest fears is the fear of not having something in my life that I was passionate about.
Recently, I gave a short talk at Ignite DFW 5 (the format is 20 slides, 15 seconds per slide with the slides auto-advancing) about how getting back on my bike after an injury helped to rekindle my passion for riding again as well as giving me a new goal to be excited about. I used the metaphor of riding a bike and saving lives to demonstrate the importance of having something in your life that you are passionate about.
I truly believe that everyone has to have something in their lives that they feel passionate about and that makes them want to get out of bed in the morning. It doesn’t matter what it is… as long as you have something. Despite what some experts say, it’s fine if you are passionate about your work or your career. This passion and excitement is what makes entrepreneurs work long hours and risk their own capital. They are passionate about their work and want to put in the hard work to see their businesses succeed.
Sometimes what you are passionate about changes over time. That’s okay too… you don’t have to just one thing that interests you or you are passionate about for your entire life. Human beings are more complex that that and it makes sense that while you lose interest for one thing, you will find interest in another.
Viktor Frankel in his book, Man’s Search for Meaning, says that the meaning of life which matters the most is the meaning that we each attach to our lives at a given time. This is important to remember as we move through life since our interests and hobbies change over time. What doesn’t change is this need to have that something in your life that you are passionate about and makes you feel alive.
I hope you enjoyed watching my story and have something in your life that you are passionate about. If you don’t… get a bike and start pedaling. You never know, I might even join you for a ride!
